Created in 1964, Buddha’s Court reflects Helen Frankenthaler’s shift toward tranquility and balance through pure color and space. The work radiates with layers of deep ultramarine, misted gray, amber gold, and traces of crimson, evoking the contemplative stillness of sacred architecture.
Frankenthaler’s soak-stain method allows pigment to flow freely into raw canvas, giving the composition a sense of breathing calm and inner luminosity. The colors seem to hover within one another — blue suggesting water and reflection, gold symbolizing enlightenment, and the soft boundaries dissolving into serene abstraction.
“A painting should be felt like light through the skin.” – Helen Frankenthaler
